Meta’s Oversight Board (OB) recently published a report examining the implications of AI in social media content moderation. The report addresses two main issues: (1) challenges posed by generative AI for content moderation, including image-based sexual abuse and misleading election-related content; and (2) challenges arising from the automation of content moderation, including over- and under-enforcement, moderation during conflicts, and concerns regarding Media Matching Service banks. The report offers several recommendations, including providing researchers with access to data relevant to AI’s impact on content moderation and user-generated content, engaging human rights experts in the deployment of AI-driven content moderation tools, and ensuring the equal allocation of AI capabilities across both low- and high-resource languages.
